The Anderson Air Force Base Radio Crew on Guam during the Korean War. That's me on the far right and in the inset. Yep, those are sergeant's stripes.

Radio Anderson

For many boys in 1951 rural Pennsylvania, the draft was always just one phone call away. Considering the David's didn't have a telephone, I figured to save Uncle Sam the trouble of trying to find our farm in the boonies, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. I may have had dreams of being a glamorous flyboy, but something much more down-to-earth got my attention: Radio Anderson.

I spent half of my four years in the service at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam, where the guys pictured at left and I had a really great time playing at being announcers. We monitored the BBC and were able to break the news to America about Roger Bannister's four-minute mile. To this day, I find that just amazing.

Left to right, that's Walt Junker, Mel Pennington, Gil Fell and me, Art Nash! I named myself after my first car, never for a second imagining that Gil David would spend the next 50 years on broadcast radio.
