Radio Anderson For many boys in 1951 rural Pennsylvania, the draft was always just one phone call away. Considering the David's didn't have a telephone, I figured to save Uncle Sam the trouble of trying to find our farm in the boonies, and enlisted in the United States Air Force. I may have had dreams of being a glamorous flyboy, but something much more down-to-earth got my attention: Radio Anderson. I spent half of my four years in the service at Anderson Air Force Base on Guam, where the guys pictured at left and I had a really great time playing at being announcers. We monitored the BBC and were able to break the news to America about Roger Bannister's four-minute mile. To this day, I find that just amazing. Left to right, that's Walt Junker, Mel Pennington, Gil Fell and me, Art Nash! I named myself after my first car, never for a second imagining that Gil David would spend the next 50 years on broadcast radio. |
